What does it mean when we say, “Things are going?”
Going where, may I ask?
I think some of us have a vague idea of where things are going. But that idea can change—for some of us, it can change daily!
In my car’s glove compartment, I have a ten-year plan on a piece of notepaper. I like that plan, but I change it around in my head all the time. Even if I do stick to that plan, will it get me “somewhere” that I want to be? Maybe . . . but maybe not.
So where are things going?
I’m not sure it matters. To be honest, if I don’t like where things are, then I won’t like where they’re going no matter what destination I see in my head.
So maybe when I say that things are moving, or things are going, or whatever I might tell you about life, I should rather start thinking about where things are. Because regardless of how life looks (like it is moving along—like I have a bright future—like I am secure with work and home), it doesn’t usually reflect what life is.
Finally Woken
Long lay the world in sin and error pining 'Til He appeared and the soul felt its worth A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorous morn.
